morning. united states government is set to go off the fiscal cliff on new year's day. at this point we don't know if the president plans to return at the to hawaii if the tax hikes are avoided well in advance of the of the new year. he's there to talk to himself. john boehner will come back at any time. his office told us it would be sometime after christmas. so he could be back as soon as today. the upper chamber in commerce is coming back tomorrow to pick up where they left off on the important domestic surveillance bisa. they will meet for a vote on the $50.6 billion bill for hurricane sandy relief. they will be back in the same zip code as far as we know there are no specific time or places on the books for an inperson meaning between the two. something else that remains to be seen is everybody will return to the table with a cooler head which the president shawas hopi for before he went on his family vacation. hoe over do you. >> the fiscal cliff we have been telling you so much about could be devastating for thousands of american businesses and their workers. their new concerns t

is reacting already to this. in fact, i was raiding a report this morning that the fiscal cliff has hit for many businesses because they're having to finalize their payrolls for 2013. what are you hearing to the leaders that you're talking to? >> i call it a curve and i think it's not as big a deal as a lot of other people think because ultimately something is going to happen. and what should happen is no plan b. for plan b to go is crazy. and they should go for the big plan or no plan whatsoever because what's going to happen is taxes will go up and then all of these republicans that signed the so-called pledge are going to be able to reduce taxes, and therefore, they haven't violated their pledge because they'll be reducing taxes. not increasing them. a deal will be made. but it's got to be the right deal. regardless of cliff or curve, it's got to be the right deal. we have to get this country back on track. and it is just so incredible what is taking place. i've been watching this and you've been watching it and been reporting on it very well for years. this isn't just something that

the president cutting his holiday vacation in hawaii short to get back to work on avoiding the fiscal cliff. the white house says the president is set to return to the nation's capital tomorrow morning to try to hammer out a deal where lawmakers on stopping automatic tax hikes and deep spending cuts from kicking in, which is set to happen, if you're not watching the calendar, six days from now. if they don't reach a deal many say it could send the country right back into recession. ed henry is live in honolulu, hawaii. is this a sign the president sees progress in the talks? >> reporter: well, good to see you. it may be the opposite. the president's not seeing progress and wants to get back to washington as soon as possible to goose the process. time is running out. economists say we could go into another recession if the fiscal cliff is not dealt with. we just learned house republicans convened a conference call with members to say be on 48 hours notice to come back to washington in the next few days to deal with this one way or another. the senate coming back into session tomorrow morning

you thought we were going to go over the fiscal cliff. now, we are in the midst of a lot of last ditch pa bargaining between the senate leaders reid and mcconnell. what do you think of the chances for a small deal in the next less than 48 hours to avoid the cliff? >> exceedingly good. i think people don't want to go over the cliff if we can avoid it. i think what have we accomplished? political victory for the president. he stood his ground and he will get tax rate increases. maybe not at 250 but on upper income americans and the sad news for the country s that we accomplished very little in terms of not becoming greece or getting out of debt. this deal won't affect the debt situation. it will be a political victory for the president and i hope we will have the courage of our convictions when it comes time to raise the debt ceiling to fight for what we believe in asp republicans. but hats off to the president, he won. >> chris: you don't think some of the more conservative colleagues will filibuster or set up a procedural road block? they will vote to avoid going over the cliff? >> no,
